Earth Day 4k
On Sunday I ran my first 4k. As some of you know, I'm training & preparing to run a half-marathon with my mother in January 2008. I began my illustrious (!) running career this past January, I started off just running a few minutes, and then walking a few minutes, until I felt ready to steadily jog. Each month I've increased my miles, now I'm running about 5 miles, every other day or so. I wanted to share that this level of fitness was so far from where I was a year ago. The thought of running 5 miles, at 5500 feet above sea level, seemed a dream that was far from my current capabilities, but I made a promise to myself to run and train for this half-marathon, and slowly and surely, like the turtle on its course, I'm doing it & it feels great.
A book recently found its way into my hands called, The Slight Edge, and it talks about how all our dreams and desires are invisible, and the process to get to them is invisible, but that each day, the ones who believe in their dreams, and walk towards them, one day they manifest. And to other people that manifested dream might seem as if it appeared out of nowhere, but in truth there was a long set of progressive thoughts and actions we took daily to get there. In the book, Jeff Olsen, writes how 95% of people give up because they don't see results right away, so they cave in to the gravity of life and give up on their dreams. He talks about how we hear 40,000 "No's" by the time were 10 and only about 5,000 "yes's", and that the person who keeps their head up, focused on their future and what they want, and happiness, and believes, and follows the chains of "yes's" in themselves, finds great success on all levels. One other point he talks about, is that because the results don't appear right away, it's easy to not take the daily steps that lead to our dreams. It's the steps each day taken collectively that either lead us closer to who we are or farther away from who we are.
I have really noticed that chain of yes actions in my 4 months of going from walking to running. To me, that I'm running 5 miles regularly, seems like a quantum leap, but every other day like clockwork, I go out and practice, and soon enough I'm running a lot of miles for me. Every time that I went out to jog, I could have just as easily stayed nestled in my warm bed another half hour instead. That is the slight edge at work that Jeff talks about in his book. Day to day the edge is unmomentous. Whether I go out jogging today or not won't be a big deal, but it could be a very big deal when I go to run the half marathon. The invitation is day to day to take steps that bring us closer to our dreams. Those steps at the time don't appear as big deals, but added up the pot at the end of the rainbow magically appears, except that there's no big magic, only the steady progression towards things that bring us joy, dreams coming true, health, vitality, happiness, and more. I have noticed too that as I become more successful in one area of my life it spreads to all areas. When you feel good no matter from what, it's contagious, and closes the gap between us and our ever growing and evolving dreams, and it happens by just taking those daily steps that require that you believe your dream is out there even though you can't see it at this time.
The Earth day run was fun, and all the proceeds went to a good cause. Here's my 4k results, that I am proud to share, and I promise if I run this race next year, my results will be even better:
